DWT travels to Virginia

Hello all!!! In light of the frenzy that hits Duke after winning a national championship in basketball, we've all been shell-shocked with excitement, which is my (very-legitimate) excuse for this delayed post...so, before I go on, I would just like to say: YES!!!! 2010 NATIONAL CHAMPS!! Ok, done now, and on to tennis.

This past weekened, we traveled to Virginia to take on Virginia Tech, and UVA. Our first stop was Blacksburg, Virginia, where we were scheduled to take on the Hokies. Playing in Blacksburg is always an adventure...often a slightly unpleasant one. Playing beneath a large empty field with an abundance of cows often causes the courts to be excessively windy...and smelly. However, we all dealt with the situation, and tried our best to adjust. We won the doubles point by a hair, with Ellah and Jess clinching it for us, and then took to the courts in singles. Ellah and I managed to win our second sets decisively, after having close first sets. Monica and Mary had no such issues, as they were on and off the court in about 5 seconds! Liz grinded it our with her very LOUD opponent, and came away with a straight set win. Jess ran into some trouble, as the girl she played decided to become Federer for a day, and lost her match in two tough sets...So, final score against V-Tech: 6-1...go DWT!!

Next up for us was UVA, and we all secretly like going there, in part because the campus is PRETTY, and there is a truly amazing frozen yogurt place that we always invade. It's also a very good tennis atmosphere, since a lot of fans came out, and the UVA girls are always intense. To start, we took the doubles point yet again, but this time it was Ellah and Amanda with the crucial clinch. 1-0 Duke!!

For singles, the situation got a little bit interesting...first off the court were Mary and Monica once again...However, Monica had lost her match, while Mary had won, which brought the team score to 2-1 for Duke. A while later, Ellah lost a tough 3-set slugfest to UVA's #1 player, bringing the team score to 2-2. Meanwhile, I had won my first set, and managed to have (and lose) a matchpoint, so I had just started my first set. Amanda was also at the start of her third set as well...so it was up to Liz to close her match out, and that she did, winning her clutch match 7-5, 7-6. Such a good win!!!

Soon after, Amanda came away with the clinch, winning her third set 6-4 a few minutes before I won my third set by the same score. Thus, final score: 5-2. GO DUKE!!!!

Trip to Virginia was deemed a great success!

Till next time,
